Public relations firms (or publicists) assist artists, record labels, and others in the music industry with promoting releases, events, and their careers in general.
They work to build an image, secure media coverage, and increase the visibility of artists through a variety of channels.

The main tasks of public relations firms include:
  • Sending out press releases and announcements about new releases
  • Booking interviews and media appearances.
  • Securing coverage in online and print media
  • Organising promotional events and press trips
  • Developing short- and long-term promotional strategies

Who hires a Publicist?

Publicists work with both individual artists and companies in the music industry.

Commonly:
  • Artists hire a publicist for specific releases or projects (e.g. a new single, album release, or tour).
  • Record labels work with PR firms to promote their artists.
  • Festivals, events, and music awards hire publicists to handle publicity.

Payment structure

The services of PR companies are usually contracted for a fixed monthly fee or through an agreement covering a specific period or project.

Some publicists also offer tailored service packages for individual campaigns, such as promoting a single album release. It is important to keep in mind that publicists cannot guarantee media coverage - they increase the chances of coverage through targeted work but cannot control the final decisions made by media outlets.
