Music Supervisors

A music supervisor works for the production company behind a film, television series, commercial, or other audiovisual material – and is responsible for finding and securing the right music for the project. The supervisor works closely with directors and producers to support the narrative and mood with music, both pre-existing and new compositions.
Music supervisors are also responsible for negotiating with rights holders – such as publishers, record labels, or artists – to secure all necessary licences. The role therefore involves both artistic and legal responsibilities. Due to the significant increase in television production in recent years, music in audiovisual contexts has become one of the most important sources of income for musicians today.

It is important to distinguish between music supervisors and music publishers:
  • Music supervisors work for the producer and select music based on the needs of the project.
  • Music publishers and other rights holders, on the other hand, are responsible for promoting the music and making it accessible to music supervisors – working on behalf of composers and authors.
As elsewhere, there is considerable overlap between these roles in Iceland. Publishers such as Colm O’Herlihy at INNI and Inga Weishappel at Wise Music often also take on the role of music supervisors.
