A music publisher manages and safeguards copyright - not master rights (which are usually handled by a label/record company).

The role of a music publisher is to promote music, ensure registrations and proper payment flows from collecting societies, and create income opportunities - for example, by securing placements in film, television, video games, and advertising. The word publisher originates from the fact that music publishers were initially sheet music houses. While this still exists to some extent (as with Iceland Music’s sheet music archive), the main role of publishers today is the administration of copyright in a digital environment.

Music publishers usually sign limited term agreements with artists, granting them the right to administer their works during the contract period. A publisher’s commission is typically 15–20% of the copyright revenues they collect and/or generate. Artists are always advised to seek legal counsel before entering into publishing agreements.

In recent years, there has been significant growth in music publishing activity in Iceland. This can be attributed to the increased focus on copyright as well as growing international opportunities for Icelandic songwriters. Companies such as INNI Music, Iceland Sync, and Wise Music Iceland work actively to place Icelandic music in international audiovisual productions while ensuring proper copyright management and payment flows to the creators.
