RÚV's New Music Policy

27 January 2026

Last Friday, RÚV hosted a meeting with the music community to present its new music policy. In it, RÚV sets ambitious goals for the dissemination of Icelandic music, underlining its role as a key supporter of the Icelandic music scene.

Key Goals

TV: Prioritises new Icelandic music and supports original creation through coverage, recordings, and diverse broadcasting. It will regularly air performances by Icelandic artists and music festivals across the country, while emphasizing the context and history of Icelandic music through documentaries and series.

Rás 1: 40% of music played annually shall be Icelandic. The aim is to broadcast from up to five domestic music festivals per year, with at least two new original or newly arranged works commissioned annually.

Rás 2: Icelandic music shall account for a minimum of 40% of daily airtime, and specialized music programming will total at least 20 hours per week. The station will also introduce a minimum of five new titles to its playlist each week and broadcast from at least four major music events a year.

Rás 2 Setting an Example

Rás 2's Music Council also presented key statistics for 2025 at the meeting. Notably, among the station’s 100 most-played songs, the ratio of Icelandic to international music was equal, as was the gender ratio. The station premiered over 800 new Icelandic titles during the year, and 50 new Icelandic albums were featured as "Album of the Week."

These figures testify to the ambition Rás 2 shows in cultivating the Icelandic music scene. We welcome this clear vision for the future and commend RÚV for their work in support of Icelandic music.
