Iceland Music Delegation Heads to WOMEX 2025

22 October 2025

Iceland Music will attend WOMEX 2025 along with a delegation of Icelandic musicians and representatives from two Icelandic music festivals. The WOMEX music conference is held annually and brings together musicians, festivals, companies, and professionals from around the world who work with music rooted in folk and traditional heritage. The event features everything from Nigerian afrobeat and South American salsa to Persian vocal music with electronic influences and more.

This year, WOMEX will take place in Tampere, Finland. Representing Iceland will be Alexandra Kjeld, Guðbjörg Hlín Guðmundsdóttir, and Arngerður María Árnadóttir from the band Umbra, along with Guðmundur Atli Pétursson and Sigmar Þór Matthíasson from Brek, and solo artists Svavar Knútur Kristinsson and Ásgeir Ásgeirsson. Sigtryggur Baldursson will attend as a representative of Iceland Music.

In the past year, the number of music festivals in Iceland focusing on folk and traditional music has grown. The Reykjavík Folk Festival was revived last year and held for the 15th time in May, while the Vaka Folk Festival took place from September 15–21 at Iðnó. Both festivals will have representatives at WOMEX this year, and it will be exciting to see what new opportunities emerge for the coming year.
