The Reykjavík Folk Festival will be held for the second consecutive year from March 19th to 21st, 2026.
The festival’s first edition took place in 2010, spearheaded by its founder and original director, Ólafur Þórðarson, a beloved musician known for his work with Ríó Tríó and various other bands.
While the term "folk music" is most commonly translated into Icelandic as þjóðlagatónlist or ' heritage music', the festival organisers prefer the term alþýðutónlist (common music). This distinction is made because the genre is defined as music originating from the common people. Aheritage passed down from person to person, generation after generation. It is a tradition rooted in friends and families gathering to sing and play spontaneously.
The festival celebrates this "common spirit," placing acoustic instruments in the spotlight and prioritising the sheer joy of playing.
The festival's opening ceremony will be at Iceland Music, Thursday 19th of March at 5pm. The festival will then mainly take place at historic venue IÐNÓ.
