With Dark Music Days just around the corner, we asked composers Þórður Hallgrímsson and Iðunn Einars to curate a special playlist for the festival. The playlist, which features their favourites from the world of Icelandic contemporary music, perfectly captures the spirit of Dark Music Days—Iceland's premier and longest-standing contemporary music festival. The festival, which has illuminated the darkest winter months since 1980, will take place this weekend, January 24–26.

This year, Þórður and Iðunn will also collaborate on a performance titled “Pipe Mass.” The concert will take place in Harpa’s Kaldalón Hall on Sunday, January 26, at 1:00 PM. It promises to be a fascinating journey exploring the material world of pipes in all their diverse forms. Audiences can expect an array of instruments from a wide variety of sources, including traditional woodwind and brass instruments, recorders made from plastic drainpipes, organ pipes, glass drinking straws, and much more.

Attendees are invited to step into this sound world of pipes, composed from such a rich variety of materials and textures, and to take part in this four-part impactful yet inherently meaningless mass, guided by the composers.

We strongly recommend you attend the festival, which offers a unique opportunity to experience the incredible creativity of Icelandic contemporary music.
