Icelandic Talent and Expertise Highlighted at Nordic Music Days 2024 in Glasgow
Nordic Music Days, one of the world’s longest-running contemporary classical music festivals, will take place in Glasgow on 30 October - 3 November 2024. The diverse festival programme highlights collaborations between Scotland and the Nordic countries and features several prominent Icelandic composers presenting new works exploring themes of nature, sound, and contemporary composition:
- Anna Thorvaldsdottir – Reflections at Qullaq (30 October, The Old Fruitmarket)
- Áki Ásgeirsson – Clarinet Yoga (30 October, CCA Theatre)
- Ása Önnu Ólafsdóttir – New Work (30 October, CCA Theatre)
- Bára Gísladóttir – Laufgar (2 November, CCA Theatre)
- Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir – Aleolae Undant (1 & 2 November, CCA Cinema)
- Hildur Guðnadóttir – The Fact of the Matter with An Extraordinary Voyage! (31 October, Glasgow City Halls)
- Hildur Elísabet Jónsdóttir – Tacet: Extrinsic (2 November, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall)
- Ríkharður H. Friðriksson – Gott (1 November, CCA Theatre)
- Þorkell Nordal – Dwellings (30 October, CCA Theatre)
The industry programme also features a handful of Icelandic delegates: Þráinn Hjálmarsson from the Dark Music Days and Hljóðön, Tryggi Baldvinsson artistic advisor at the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Páll Ragnar Pálsson and Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir from the Iceland Composers Society who is also the Director of the Dark Music Days Festival, and Signý Leifsdóttir and Finnur Karlsson representing Iceland Music.Nordic Music Days, a leading contemporary classical music festival, was founded in 1888 by the Council of Nordic Composers (NKR) and for only the third time in its 136 year history the festival will take place outside the Nordic countries, this time in Glasgow, a UNESCO City of Music.This year's festival highlights participation from artists across Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Scotland, offering concerts, installations, talks, and participatory events across the city. - Nordic Viola: Arctic Edgelands (2 November): Exploring the intersection of Shetland and Greenland at 60°N, featuring composer Bára Gísladóttir.
- Festival Club: Composer Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir will present Aleolae Undant on both 1 and 2 November.
- Dark to Light (2 November): Featuring Hildur Elísabet Jónsdóttir’s work Tacet: Extrinsic with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
- An Extraordinary Voyage! (31 October): Featuring Hildur Guðnadóttir’s The Fact of the Matter with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
The festival is a collaboration between the NKR and Scotland’s Royal Scottish National Orchestra, with a focus on sustainable practices and cross-border partnerships.
