The Icelandic metal scene has seen an exponential rise in popularity abroad, marked by consistently high musicianship and strong community bonds. Yet emerging Icelandic bands still face challenges shaped by the country’s geography and size.
On Monday 13 October, Iceland Music hosts a presentation by Grant Dunderman, who will share findings from his master’s thesis “Iceland is LOUD: Antecedents of international success for Icelandic metal bands.”
The research identifies the factors that contribute to the international success of Icelandic metal bands, examines the networks that support the scene, and explores project management strategies used by musicians, managers, and organisers. Drawing on interviews with artists, managers, and other key figures in Iceland’s metal community, Dunderman’s work offers a practical and accessible look at how the business side of metal music can be understood and applied within the local scene.
This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in metal, hardcore, punk, and other extreme music to learn more about the local scene and where the opportunities lie.
Originally from Illinois, USA, Dunderman was active in Chicago’s underground punk and metal scene before relocating to Reykjavík. He has worked in marketing and design in Chicago, most recently at Feeding America, the country’s largest hunger relief non-profit organisation.
We look forward to seeing you!
