“What can a publisher do for me?” It’s a question songwriters ask at every conference and festival. But before it can be answered, songwriters first need to decide where their ambitions lie.

Some publishers are small and local, with close contact with their writers. Others are multinationals that often sign writers in territories where they don’t have an office, while “boutique” publishers specialise in specific genres. Some writers want help with camps, co-writes and connections to up-and-coming producers. Others want to branch out into neo-classical work, or focus on sync and score opportunities.

In this session, publishing veteran Steven Tallamy and composer Biggi Hilmars dig into the ins and outs of the publishing industry: weighing up the pros and cons, and advising on when and how to approach a publisher, and whether you even need one.

Steven Tallamy – COO, Wise Music Group, Nordic and Baltic Regions

Steven Tallamy has worked in the music industry for over 40 years, holding international roles at major labels including Marketing Director at Universal Music UK and Strategic Marketing Director at Sony Music Nordics. In 2014 he moved into publishing with Edition Wilhelm Hansen/Wise Music in Copenhagen, where he built a music supervision department that has worked on over 30 feature films, plus documentaries, TV dramas and advertising. In 2022 he opened Wise Music Iceland in Reykjavík. He is now Chief Operating Officer for the Nordic and Baltic regions, leading A&R, sync and music supervision, and was recently music supervisor on the award-winning Danish feature Kvinde, ukendt.
