Groningen hosted a strong lineup of Icelandic talent at this year’s Eurosonic Festival (ESNS25), featuring compelling performances from Sunna Margrét, Kaktus Einarsson, and Supersport! As one of Europe’s most influential showcase festivals, ESNS has a strong track record of launching emerging artists, making it the perfect platform for these musicians to connect with new audiences.

Sunna Margrét Captivates at Oosterpoort’s Bovenzaal

On Wednesday, January 11th, Sunna Margrét delivered an impressive performance at Oosterpoort´s Bovenzaal. Blending experimental textures with hypnotic rhythms, she took the audience on a journey through her avant-garde electronic soundscapes.

ESNS asks their media partners to submit artist recommendations prior to the festival, and Sunna was among the most highly endorsed, receiving mentions from seven different outlets. Expectations for her performance were therefore high, and she more than delivered. Her album Finger on Tongue has already gained significant recognition, with BBC 6 Music, The Quietus, and The Line of Best Fit all giving it glowing reviews.

Kaktus Einarsson Impresses with Artistic Depth

On Thursday, January 12th, Kaktus Einarsson took the stage at WEnuttbutter, delivering his deeply personal music with effortless brilliance to an engaged audience. Kaktus masterfully blended electronic, classical, and pop influences, with his performance primarily centered around his latest album  Lobster Coda (2024) which features high-profile guests such as Damon Albarn and Nanna (Of Monsters and Men) and explores themes of resilience and transformation.

With recommendations from six media outlets ahead of the festival, Kaktus was one of the most talked-about artists, and his introspective yet powerful performance resonated strongly with the crowd.

Explosive Energy from Supersport!

On Friday, January 14th, Iceland’s presence at ESNS25 concluded with a performance from Supersport!, who brought their jangly yet infectious indie sound to the festival stage at VERA. Their new album, allt sem hefur gerst (Everything That Has Happened), took center stage, with the band delivering a high-energy set that showcased their sharp songwriting and playful spirit.
