Dark Music Days 2025: A Captivating Celebration of Contemporary Music in Reykjavík

From January 24–26, 2025, Dark Music Days once again showcased a diverse mix of contemporary music, highlighting both established and emerging voices in Iceland’s vibrant contemporary music scene. The annual festival brings much-needed brightness to the darkest winter months, offering audiences a rich and immersive musical experience.

The breadth of programming was a defining feature of this year’s festival. Cantoque Ensemble, Caput Ensemble, Riot Ensemble and Iceland Symphony Orchestra presented compelling interpretations of contemporary works, while more unconventional performances—such as John McCowen’s solo concert and Masaya Ozaki’s unique show in Harpa’s basement parking garage—added an experimental edge.

Festival director Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir reflected on the festival’s impact, stating:
“New music connects with people in powerful ways, and Dark Music Days 2025 bore witness to this, with strong attendance and a diverse audience drawn together by the program. The festival continues to be a driving force for artistic exploration—a space where creativity thrives, risks are taken, and new projects often begin their journey to larger stages.”
Viibra, the all-female flute septet, delivered one of the festival’s most memorable performances at Ásmundarsalur. Drawing from years of collaboration with Björk, their intricate, boundary-pushing arrangements resonated deeply within the venue’s unique space.
Meanwhile, multidisciplinary artist Ásta Fanney took the stage at Harpa’s Eldborg, showcasing the power of performance art to hold a full concert hall. Recently announced as Iceland’s representative for the 2026 Venice Biennale, Ásta’s genre-blurring work continues to push creative boundaries.
