Reykjavík, Iceland -– The Reykjavík Jazz Festival takes place in Reykjavik from August 27-31. Experience five days of exceptional music performed by talented musicians from the United States, Europe, and Iceland.
Reykjavík Jazz Festival is the second oldest music festival in Iceland, being held annually since 1990 known as a celebration of Icelandic jazz music. The festival's main goal is to support and promote jazz music locally and abroad, providing a platform for musicians and enthusiasts to perform and enjoy the best in both Icelandic and international jazz.
This year, the festival will feature performances from artists from the United States, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Greece, and the Faroe Islands. Concerts will be held at various venues including Harpa, Fríkirkjan in Reykjavík, Jómfrúin, SKY bar, Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar, BIRD, and the Independent Congregation. Additionally, the whale-watching company Elding will offer concerts with the Jazzcruise Brassband on one of their boats.
In collaboration with the Iceland Academy of the Arts (MÍT), workshops will be offered by two international artists: guitarist Jens Larsen and saxophonist Chris Speed, who is well known to Icelanders. There will also be showcase concerts featuring newly graduated students from the Jazz Department of MÍT at a new venue called BIRD.
The board of Reykjavík Jazz includes Pétur Oddbergur Heimisson, chairman and managing director, Rebekka Blöndal, singer and co-director, and Sigmar Þór Matthíasson, bassist and co-director. The board was elected at the Reykjavík Jazz annual meeting at the end of January this year and has been working hard to prepare for the festival in recent months.
The board emphasises the tremendous growth in the jazz scene in Iceland, where many top Icelandic jazz musicians perform regularly at concerts around the city. They look forward to coming together, celebrating, and enjoying a diverse range of jazz music.
