Kalli/‘While the City Sleeps’
Without Gravity’s singer releases debut
solo album on September 22nd through One Little Indian In 2005, the
Icelandic band Without Gravity, released their critically received debut
album, Tenderfoot. Fronted by the beautiful voice of lead singer Kalli
(Karl Henry), the band earned respect at the highest levels, with many
tastemakers becoming passionate fans. When the band broke up, Kalli picked
up his guitar and recorded ten new songs for his debut solo album,
While the City Sleeps. This album continues the tradition of
beauty and pain finding a nesting ground in the heart of a young man.
“I wrote the album when I had just split from the band, and was going
through some changes in my personal life too, so there were a lot of
negative emotions curling up inside of me,” explains Kalli. Recorded
at home at Studio 128 in downtown Reykjavik, While the City Sleeps
draws blood immediately, guided by Kalli’s worn, sombre vocals. Drawing
comparisons to those masters of dark, pop realms such as Elliott Smith,
Jeff Buckley, and Neil Young, While The City Sleeps is deep, doomed and dream
like, a record scattered with illusions of darkness, stormy weather, and uncertainty.
It’s also a deeply personal record, as Kalli writes about personal transitions, the movement
from excess to stability and the pain that comes with the change. Along with
producer and multi-instrumentalist Arnar G., Kalli recorded, performed and produced everything
himself on While the City Sleeps, furthering this intensely personal journey.
But positivism shines through.
