Neebing - Chinese Music Pioneer
Neebing is one of the founding fathers of China’s electronic music. He also wears designer glasses with octagonal frames, so he’s an artist and used to be an architect and urban planner too. His latest adventure in nightlife, Song Music Bar + Kitchen, is an homage to cultural exchange, arts platform, horizontal integration of cool people, intelligence and the terraced rice fields of southern China. He’s a compelling guy.
Neebing has been cool for over a decade now. He started as a radio DJ in Shenzhen boomtown back in the mid-‘90s. He brought Ken Ishii/Richie Hawtin to the old Club Orange in Beijing. He became one of China’s earliest and most successful audiopreneurs, guys who saw that music wasn’t just stuff that came out of speaker, but a lifestyle and an entirely new one at that. He went abroad and spent years in Berlin kicking soccer balls with guys like Mijk Van Dijk. He once partied with Danny Tenaglia for 12 straight hours. He came back to China and ran the Morcheeba tour. He ushered Ladytron around the Middle Kingdom. In 2005 he arrived in Beijing smelling opportunity. Now he manages bands, holds distro rights for Ninja Tunes and Minty Fresh records in China and has launched Song, 350 sq. meters of AV love, along with sculptor Zhong Song whose claim to fame is the sundial that sits at the end of Century Avenue in Shanghai.
Whether the smart people want to hang out in the belly of a mall is a question for Harvard PhD students to ponder, but whatever, the man has great line-up of events all the time and his next stop is Shanghai World Expo, He is trying to make all the events funky instead of polically stupid.
